LAST night, at his apartment in the Cipete Selatan area of South Jakarta, my Subud brother, Dino, was experimenting with the effects of black-and-white photography. He took pictures of me with his phone camera while I was sitting on the couch, absorbed in my smartphone. This is how the photo came out. To strengthen the narrative of these images, I decided to create a story about myself, which is as follows:
Arifin Dwi Slamet, a man whose gaze held the depth of
three decades in the demanding world of branding, leaned back, a silent
testament to a life richly lived. His hands, though casually at rest, had
crafted countless narratives, shaping perceptions and forging connections for
brands big and small. A historian by training from the esteemed University of
Indonesia, Arifin’s strategic mind is a tapestry woven with the threads of the
past, allowing him to see patterns and predict futures where others see only
chaos.
Beyond the work desk, his passions paint a vivid portrait of a soul constantly seeking wonder. The rhythmic clatter of trains on tracks spoke to his railway enthusiast heart, a metaphor perhaps for the journey of life itself, with its many stations and unexpected detours. The disciplined world of the military, a stark contrast to the fluidity of advertising, offers another facet of his multifaceted curiosity. And for 22 years, his dedication to Subud had grounded him, providing a spiritual anchor amidst the ever-shifting currents of his professional life.
In this quiet moment, holding his
phone, Arifin isn’t just a strategist; he is a storyteller, a seeker, a man
whose every experience, every interest, fueled the boundless creativity that
defined him. His story isn’t just about crafting campaigns; it is about
crafting a life—a masterpiece of passion, intellect, and unwavering spirit.©2025
